Rabat — Morocco’s national press serves a crucial function in supporting national causes and defending the country’s supreme interests, the Minister of Youth, Culture, and Communication said Monday in Rabat.

Speaking at the awards ceremony for the 23rd National Press Prize, Mohamed Mehdi Bensaid stressed that following the UN Security Council’s adoption of Resolution 2797 on the Moroccan Sahara, the Moroccan press must accompany this major turning point, which is driven by King Mohammed VI’s leadership.

The press plays an essential role in defending the nation’s great causes and the country’s higher interests through information, analysis, and debate, Bensaid said.

He added that the press represents more than just a profession — it serves as a noble public service and a bulwark of democracy by revealing truth and spreading reliable, responsible information. A free press guarantees transparency in public action, he noted.

Bensaid stressed that tomorrow’s journalists must master research, verification, data processing, and deep analysis skills while respecting digital responsibility principles and professional ethics.

The minister also pointed out current challenges facing the press sector, particularly the economic model, digital transition, and engagement with different segments of society.

Regarding the National Press Awards, Bensaid explained that King Mohammed VI established the award on November 15, 2002. It provides an annual opportunity to encourage Moroccan journalistic talent and honor veterans who have rendered great service to the profession and actively contributed to defending its values and noble mission.

He expressed deep gratitude to everyone who contributed to this edition’s success, especially the jury president and members, for their considerable efforts and commendable professional work in evaluating the competing journalistic productions.

He said his department stands ready to respond positively to their recommendations and proposals.

The Moroccan press, given its historical vocation as a partner in building democracy and serving society, moves forward confidently into the future, Bensaid concluded. It remains a responsible and active force in a healthy society and its progress.
