Morocco’s Weather Office Forecasts Very Heavy Rainfall, Snowfall and Winds

The Interior Ministry issued a warning, calling on citizens to exercise maximum caution amid the upcoming weather disturbances.

Rabat – The General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM) issued a new weather alert, forecasting very heavy rainfall, snow, and severe weather across several provinces in Morocco on Friday and Saturday.

In the new weather alert, the weather office said strong storm-force winds of 90 to 105 kilometers per hour are expected in Al Haouz and Chichaoua. Meanwhile, winds of 90 to 100 kilometers will affect the provinces and prefectures of El Jadida, Sidi Bennour, Safi, Essaouira, Midelt, and Azilal.

Wind of 75 to 90 kilometers is also expected in the provinces of Youssoufia, Figuig, Jerada, Oujda-Angad, Taourirt, Kelaa Seraghna, Marrakech, Rhamna, Agadir Ida-Outanane, Taroundat, and Bouelmane.

The same weather will affect Guercif and Berkane from 11:30 a.m. until Saturday midnight.

Winds between 75 to 90 kilometers per hour are also expected to hit Rabat, Temara, Skhirat, Nouaceur, Casablanca, Mediouna, Berrchid, Mohammedia, Benslimane, and Settat from Friday night to tomorrow at 6 a.m.

The same weather will affect El Jadida, Sidi Bennour, Safi, Essaouira, Chichaoua, Berrechid, Al Haouz, Figuig, and Ouarzazate from Saturday 12 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Very heavy rainfall between 80 to 120 millimeters will concern mountainous areas in the prefectures of Agadir, Outanane, Taroudant, and Essaouira from 5 p.m. until Saturday, 11 p.m.

Rainfall of 30 to 45 millimeters is also expected in Safi, Sidi Bennour, El Jadida, and Chtouka Ait Baha, Inzegane-Ait Melloul, Tiznit, and Chichaoua, as well as Al Haouz, and Youssoufia on Friday at 5 p.m.

The weather will persist until Saturday at 6 p.m.

Meanwhile, rainfall between 30 and 45 will concern Rehamna, Settat, and Marrakech from Saturday midnight until 10 a.m. 

Snowfall ranging from 20 to 50 centimeters is expected above 1,600 meters in Midelt, Tinghir, Azilal, Ouarzazate, Al Haouz, Taroudant, and Chichaoua from Friday at 9 p.m. until Saturday at 6 p.m.

Moroccan schools have suspended classes across several regions, including Taroudant, Chtouka Ait Baha, Essaouira, and others, due to weather disturbances.

The Ministry of Transport called on all professionals in passenger transport, freight transport, and school transport, in addition to road users, to exercise the utmost vigilance and to strictly comply with traffic and road safety regulations during their travels over the weekend.

The ministry also called on citizens to postpone non-essential travel, particularly in areas affected by the weather disturbances.

It also urged drivers to monitor weather developments before and during their journeys and to stay informed about the condition of the road network.

The Ministry of Interior warned citizens across the country to exercise maximum caution, emphasizing that the country has been mobilizing special measures to tackle any challenges and contribute to safeguarding citizens.
