Rabat – Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) has renewed its commitment to advancing knowledge and strengthening Morocco’s research ecosystem through a strategic cooperation with the Fulbright Program.
UM6P conveyed this commitment in a new report emphasizing the significance of the integration of the Fulbright Program into its academic and research ecosystem.
An impactful partnership
Over 30 Fulbright scholars contributed to UM6P’s academic mission over the past eight years.
The partnership has positively impacted the school’s academic mission across disciplines, including computer science and applied engineering, as well as environmental sciences and interdisciplinary research.
UM6P’s report notably recalled the scholars’ participation in different projects with direct practical impacts. For example, researchers who participated in AI-focused projects created algorithms used for resource optimization in industrial and agricultural settings.
The project contributed to connecting computational research to tangible economic and environmental results.
Fulbright scholars also helped in projects related to water management at the International Water Research Institute (IWRI).
These projects focused on incorporating field data into predictive models to help guide water security.
The report cited testimonies from Fulbright alumni, including Yassine Ait Brahim, an Associate Professor at IWRI-UM6P.
Strategic outreach and greater visibility
In his testimony, Ait Brahim stressed how the Fulbright experience allowed him to frame his research questions within a broader international context.
“Rather than working in isolation, the program connected our locally grounded research to global scientific priorities and gave it greater visibility,” he said, stressing that this established long-term collaborations “that continue to shape strategic research directions.”
Lina Migliore, a Fulbright researcher at IWRI-UM6P, said her Fulbright experience at UM6P is marked by an immediate connection between academic research and real-world application.
“The University’s strong links with industry and public stakeholders make it possible to move beyond theoretical work and engage directly with the actors implementing solutions on the ground,” she added.
She also cited several opportunities represented, including institutional support, access to local networks, and more features that have been key in shaping her research approach.
The collaboration between UM6P and the Fulbright program extends beyond being a partnership between the two parties.
Khalid Baddou, the chief institutional affairs officer at UM6P, said this collaboration “reflects a shared commitment between Morocco and the United States” to advance knowledge through a “meaningful academic exchange.”
Badou explained, “By bringing international scholars into close interaction with our research ecosystem, the partnership strengthens our ability to address locally relevant challenges while contributing to global scientific dialogue.”
UM6P’s statement concluded by stressing the importance of the program, citing the engagement of scholars from the Fulbright program that is closely monitored with metrics, including the number of field experiment initiatives and applied intentions that result from research projects.
It also recalled the importance of the Moroccan American Commission for Educational and Cultural Exchange (MACECE) and its contribution to fostering academic excellence by bringing Moroccan and American scholars together through teaching exchanges and other initiatives.
