Rabat – The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is confident that Morocco can contribute to the success of its and the World Bank’s annual meetings, which are scheduled to take place in Marrakech in October.

The IMF’s communications director Julie Kozack briefed the press on the upcoming annual meetings, which she said will showcase Morocco’s strength.

On Thursday, Kozack started her briefing by re-extending her condolences and sympathy with Morocco following the devastating earthquake that claimed the lives of thousands on September 8.

She also re-extended the same message to Libya, which suffered devastating flooding earlier this month.

“Our hearts are with the victims of the tragedies and their loved ones,” she said.

At the IMF-World Bank annual meetings, Kozack stressed that the institution is very eager to be in Morocco to stand with the country and highlight its strength.

She recalled that the annual meetings were planned to take place in Marrakech in 2020, but were postponed due to COVID-19.

This, however, allowed the IMF and the World Bank five years to prepare for the event.

“So after those five years of hard work, I’m confident that these meetings will showcase the strength of Morocco, the Moroccan people, and the Moroccan authorities,” she said.

The event will also serve as a platform to bring the global community together, Kozack added, saying that this is the first time in 50 years that the annual meetings will take place in AFrica.

“It’s a consequential moment for our global membership,” she said.

Earlier this month, the IMF reassured the international community that the institution along with the World Bank and Moroccan authorities have worked together to assess whether Marrakech can still hold the annual meetings following the earthquake.

“Key considerations were that the Meetings would not disrupt vital relief and reconstruction efforts and that the safety of the participants can be assured,” the IMF said in a statement.
