Rabat – Morocco’s High Commission for Planning (HCP) has reported a slight improvement in household confidence during the first quarter of 2026, but many families continue to face financial pressure, especially when it comes to saving money.
According to the HCP’s latest survey, the Household Confidence Index (HCI) rose to 64.4 points, up from 57.6 in the previous quarter and 46.6 a year earlier. This shows that households feel somewhat more optimistic about their situation, even if challenges remain.
One of the main concerns is the limited ability of families to save. Only 12.1% of households said they expect to save money in the next 12 months, while a large majority, 87.8%, believe they will not be able to do so.
Although this indicator improved slightly compared to previous periods, it remains deeply negative. This reflects ongoing financial strain within Moroccan households.
Current financial conditions also remain difficult for many families. Around 59.9% of households said their income is just enough to cover expenses, while 37.5% reported that they either go into debt or use their savings to make ends meet. Only a very small share, 2.5%, said they are able to save part of their income.
Despite these challenges, the report shows some signs of improvement. More households now expect their financial situation to get better in the coming year. About 21.1% believe their finances will improve, compared to 15.3% who expect things to worsen. This indicates a shift into slightly positive territory after several quarters of pessimism.
However, rising food prices continue to weigh heavily on households. An overwhelming 93.3% of families said food prices increased over the past year, and nearly 79% expect prices to keep rising. This ongoing increase in the cost of basic goods makes it harder for families to save or improve their living conditions.
