Fez – Morocco’s parliamentary diplomacy continues to gain momentum as senior officials seek to strengthen ties with European institutions amid growing regional and global challenges.

On Tuesday in Rabat, Vice-President of the Chamber of Councillors Lahcen Haddad held talks with a delegation from the European People’s Party (EPP) within the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.

The meeting was also attended by Abdeslam Lebbar, president of the Istiqlal Group for Unity and Egalitarianism in the Chamber of Councillors, and Allal Amraoui, head of the same group in the Chamber of Representatives.

It focused on advancing parliamentary cooperation between Morocco and European bodies, reflecting the country’s long-standing and advanced relations with the European Union.

According to an official statement, both sides discussed ways to elevate this cooperation into a more structured and balanced partnership.

The aim is to move beyond traditional exchanges toward a framework based on shared responsibility and aligned priorities on key issues.

Discussions also covered pressing political and socio-economic topics, including migration, regional stability, particularly in the Sahel, and the challenges linked to energy transition.

Participants stressed the need for closer coordination and more integrated approaches, alongside stronger exchanges of legislative expertise and oversight practices.

Haddad highlighted the openness of the Moroccan Parliament to its European environment, presenting Morocco as a reliable partner with an active role at both regional and international levels.

He highlighted that effective partnerships must rest on balance, mutual commitment, and joint investment in stability.

Haddad also pointed to the growing importance of parliamentary diplomacy in building trust between partners, especially at a time of rapid global change.

For their part, members of the EPP delegation commended Morocco’s experience in political reform and legislative development.

They reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening dialogue mechanisms with the Chamber of Councillors and expanding avenues of cooperation in support of shared interests and the broader Morocco-EU strategic partnership.
