Rabat – US President Joseph Biden held a phone call with King Mohammed VI today to once again express his condolences for the tragic loss of life and devastation caused by the earthquake that recently struck Morocco.
The phone call also aimed to “reaffirm the deep partnership between Morocco and the United States,” said the White House in a statement.
In their discussion, Biden and King Mohammed VI reviewed the US assistance designated to strengthen Morocco’s disaster response efforts, including the $1 million that the US allocated to support relief activities.
In addition, the US President stressed his country’s readiness to support recovery in earthquake-hit areas.
The two leaders emphasized the importance of continued collaboration and “agreed to remain in close contact,” added the statement.
A magnitude 7 earthquake hit Morocco’s Al Haouz region on September 8, causing massive destruction.

The earthquake, which was the strongest to hit the country in decades, claimed the lives of nearly 3,000 people and injured more than 5,000 others.
As Morocco begins to recover and rebuild the affected areas, several countries and international organizations have offered support and donated to the country’s special fund for earthquake relief.
The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has joined these efforts, donating $1 million in support of humanitarian assistance to support the communities affected by the earthquake.
“This funding will help organizations on the ground provide emergency food assistance, health services, shelter, and mental health and psychosocial resources to assist the Moroccan-led response,” USAID said in a statement, adding that the US would be sharing “specialized technical expertise” with the Moroccan government to bolster its emergency response.
