European Union (EU) heads of state and government have joined other international organizations in sharing solidarity and sympathy with Morocco following the devastating earthquake that struck the country on Friday.

In a letter to King Mohammed VI, the EU Council conveyed its members’ support and condolences to King Mohammed VI for the “terrible loss of life” following the earthquake of Friday, September 8.

“We are deeply saddened by the devastating consequences of this tragic event,” the letter said, stressing the bloc’s full solidarity with the Moroccan people.

Wishing a speedy recovery to the injured, the EU also expressed its readiness to assist Morocco in “any way you may deem useful.”

The EU Council concluded the letter by recalling its sympathy, compassion, and solidarity with the monarch and with Morocco.

“Our sincere condolences to Your Majesty, and to the government and people of Morocco,” the letter read.

Many countries have joined Morocco’s forces and efforts on the ground to tackle the crisis, with Spain, Qatar, and UK sending rescue teams to help authorities search for and assist victims.

The earthquake that struck Morocco on Friday has left over 2,400 people dead so far, while thousands of others sustained injuries of different severities.

Morocco also declared three days of national mourning since Saturday, with King Mohammed VI launching high instructions calling on the government to intensify efforts to help the affected people.
