Rabat – Israeli President Issac Herzog presented Andre Azoulay, Senior Adviser to Morocco’s King Mohammed VI, with the prestigious Presidential Medal of Honor during a ceremony held at the Israeli presidential palace on Wednesday.

In a statement to the Moroccan News Agency (MAP), Azoulay expressed his pride in serving both King Mohammed VI and his late father, King Hassan II. “In Morocco, in the land of Islam, I am a proud Jew, and I live my Judaism to the fullest,” he emphasized.

The event was an opportunity to celebrate the strong bonds between Morocco and Israel, to which Azoulay has greatly contributed.

The Moroccan-Jewish politician was celebrated for his efforts to promote tolerance, coexistence, and understanding among cultures and religions, as well as fostering dialogue between Israelis and Palestinians.

“This recognition is a source of great hope and immense pride for my country, Morocco, and for Moroccan civilization, which continues to embody the values of peace and coexistence,” the King’s adviser said.

Azoulay went on to stress that the recognition he received extends to all Moroccans, regardless of their religious background, highlighting the North African country’s commitment to fostering peace and coexistence under the leadership of King Mohammed VI.

Azoulay, himself of Moroccan Jewish heritage, has been an outspoken advocate for the preservation of Jewish culture and heritage in Morocco. He has encouraged Moroccan Jews, both within Morocco and in the diaspora, to maintain their connection to their roots and preserve their unique cultural identity.

During the ceremony, Herzog lauded Azoulay as “a man of peace and dialogue, a devoted statesman, Adviser to King Mohammed VI, and the late King Hassan II.”

The Israeli Presidential Medal is the highest civilian decoration in Israel. It was previously awarded to prominent figures, including Henry Kissinger, Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, Joe Biden, and Angela Merkel.
