Talented FC Barcelona youngster Lamine Yamal has expressed joy over representing Spain’s national team, arguing that he has always been clear about his choice.

“I have always played for Spain, since the under-15s. I have always been clear, I want to play for Spain,” he said in an interview published by Spain’s football federation. “Win a European Championship, a World Cup, and everything  that is possible.”

Spanish head coach Luis de La Fuente called up the young footballer last week as part of the squad for the upcoming September international break.

The choice came following a fierce race between both Spain and Morocco to secure the wonderkid’s services as he has been making headlines for his eye-catching performances with FC Barcelona at only 16 years of age.

Born to a Moroccan father and an Equatorial Guinean mother, the Spanish-born talented athlete caught the attention of Morocco’s Football Federation and head coach Walid Regragui, who wished to add Yamal to the Atlas Lions’ lineup to strengthen the squad further.

Yamal, however, had a different dream, describing Spain’s decision to call him up as incredible.

“It’s incredible to experience this, I want to make the most of it,” he stressed.

The 16-year old footballer also expressed determination to bring “joy, verticality and audacity to the Spanish team.”

He added that his mother was the first one to hear the news after Spain called him up.

“Since I was in the youth team, I played against much bigger players, she told me to be careful. But I always tell her to trust me,” he said.
