Rabat – Moroccan winger Sofiane Boufal is set to miss Morocco’s international games in September, as he suffered an injury during his match against Qatar SC with his club Al-Rayyan on August 25.

An update released by Al Rayyan said that Boufal is suffering from a hamstring injury which will require him up to three months to recover. The club’s medical staff will carry out further tests to determine the appropriate treatment.

Boufal will therefore miss the Atlas Lions’ next two matches against Liberia on September 9 and Burkina Faso on September 12, and could miss at least parts of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) if the injury is exacerbated.

Boufal is one of the key players in Morocco’s squad, notably helping the team to reach the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Recent reports have indicated that a number of Moroccan players will not participate in Morocco’s upcoming matches, namely Munir El Mohamedi, Amine Harit, and now Sofiane Boufal.

El Mohamedi was reported to have picked up a shoulder injury while playing with his Saudi club Al Wehda that would prevent him from playing for the Moroccan national team.

El Mohamedi is undergoing a recovery program at Aspetar, Doha’s state-of-the-art hospital complex, and will only return to the pitch after the FIFA competitions in September.

On the other hand, Harit sustained an injury to his knee on August 26 while representing Olympique Marseille against Stade Brest in the third matchday of the French Ligue 1.

Moroccan head coach Walid Regragui is set to announce his squad list on August 31 at 11 a.m. at the conference hall of the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Sale.
