Rabat – Morocco has been unanimously re-elected to the vice-presidency of the Executive Committee of the European Centre for Global Interdependence and Solidarity, known as the North-South Centre of the Council of Europe, during a meeting held on 19 May in Lisbon.
The renewed mandate reflects broad confidence in Morocco’s role within the institution and highlights recognition of its sustained engagement in promoting dialogue, international cooperation, and solidarity between Europe, the Mediterranean, Africa, and the Arab world.
The decision constitutes a validation of Morocco’s active contribution to the work of the North-South Centre, particularly in advancing shared values such as democracy, human rights, the rule of law, and intercultural dialogue, in line with the Council of Europe’s priorities and the Centre’s mission to strengthen mutual understanding between peoples.
It also reinforces the credibility of Moroccan diplomacy in areas linked to North-South partnership, triangular cooperation, human development, and efforts to bridge regions and cultures through constructive engagement.
During the meeting, Morocco’s Consul General in Strasbourg, Soumia Bouhamidi, who is responsible for relations with the Council of Europe, emphasized the importance of collective action in addressing global challenges, stressing that “no major challenge can be tackled in isolation.” She also called for the strengthening of multilateralism grounded in respect for international law.
Through this new mandate covering the 2026–2028 period, Morocco reaffirms its commitment to continue its active role within the Executive Committee of the North-South Centre, working closely with international partners to promote inclusive governance based on dialogue and mutual respect, while supporting a more balanced and cooperative multilateral system in service of peace, stability, and sustainable development.
