Neymar’s father has pleaded with his son in a tearful letter, urging him to keep playing football after Brazil’s 2-1 defeat to Norway brought their World Cup journey to a shocking end.
“My request to you, Ney: keep playing football, please,” Neymar’s father said.
He shared the emotional message publicly, encouraging his son to find strength, come back stronger, and continue a legacy already filled with major achievements. He urged Neymar not to give up on his career, even after closing his international chapter.
The Brazilian legend announced his retirement from international football right after the disappointing Round of 16 defeat to Norway.
“I tried. I tried. It started here at Met Life stadium and I finished here. It’s now over,” Ney said following the game.
The 34-year-old left the pitch in tears after Erling Haaland scored twice in a masterclass performance that took him to the top of the tournament’s scoring charts alongside Messi and Mbappe, with seven goals.
The defeat marked Brazil’s earliest World Cup elimination since 1990, when they were knocked out by Argentina.
Despite Neymar’s heartbreak, he still made history by becoming the first Brazilian player to reach 80 international goals after converting a late penalty against Haaland’s Norway.
Neymar ends a 16-year international career with 130 appearances, 80 goals, and 59 assists, leaving the Seleçao as their all-time leading scorer after surpassing the legendary Pelé.
