Rabat – EA Sports made history with the release of Title-Update 16 for FIFA 23, announcing the world premiere of a new feature in the football simulation that offers player models with hijab.
The update depicts Moroccan defender Nouhaila Benzina, who has made headlines during the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
Nouhaila Benzina created waves during the World Cup when she became the first player to wear a hijab in a World Cup match.
The 25-year-old defender made history in a match against South Korea, and her achievement was set to be further celebrated in FIFA 23.
EA Sports, the developer of the popular football game, planned to update her virtual likeness in the game to reflect this groundbreaking moment.
In a social media announcement on Wednesday, EA Sports unveiled that the Title-Update 16 was now available for download and installation.
The update however hit a snag according to a report from sportsoftheday.com as users encountered a glitch after downloading and installing the patch.
The problem became apparent when players found that the content overview of the new features in Title-Update 16 kept appearing every time they accessed the main menu, instead of the expected behavior of showing it only on the first start after download.
The annoyance was coupled with a more significant issue – Nouhaila Benzina was nowhere to be found in the FIFA 23 World Cup mode.
It seems that the Moroccan defender’s virtual likeness had completely disappeared from the game after installing the update. Players were unable to select her as part of the Moroccan squad, raising eyebrows and speculations that EA Sports might have mistakenly released the update ahead of schedule.
