Casablanca — Moroccan police and customs officers at Tanger Med Port thwarted an attempt to smuggle 1,571 psychotropic pills into the country during the early hours of Saturday, according to a security source.

The pills were discovered during border control operations carried out on a passenger vehicle bearing foreign registration plates shortly after it arrived on a ferry from a European port. Authorities said the seized shipment consisted of 1,571 narcotic prescription pills of various types.

The vehicle was subjected to inspection by officers from the General Directorate of National Security and customs services operating at the port. The search led to the discovery and seizure of the psychotropic substances before they could enter Moroccan territory.

Police arrested the driver of the vehicle and a passenger who was traveling with him. One of the two suspects holds Spanish nationality, the security source said.

The two men were placed under a judicial investigation being conducted under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor’s office. Investigators are working to determine all circumstances surrounding the case and identify any potential links to wider criminal networks, both within Morocco and abroad.

Authorities have not released further details about the origin of the pills, the identities of the suspects, or their intended destination.

According to the security source, the operation is part of ongoing efforts by Moroccan security services to combat international trafficking in drugs and psychotropic substances. It also falls within broader measures targeting various forms of cross-border crime.

Tanger Med is one of Morocco’s main gateways for passenger and commercial traffic between the country and Europe, making it a key point for border control operations carried out by police and customs authorities.
