Rabat – Morocco-US security cooperation is poised to receive a boost with the recent appointment of CIA Director William Burns as advisor to US President Joe Biden.

Under his mandate as CIA director, the US intelligence agency made significant strides in boosting cooperation with its Moroccan counterpart DST. Burns warmly received El Hammouchi during his official visit to the United States, and in return visited the DST headquarters in Rabat, reflecting the two countries’ mutual desire to strengthen bilateral security cooperation.

The move comes on the heels of Israel’s recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over the Western Sahara territory.

The collaboration between the two countries has already yielded tangible results. The exchange of official visits between the two top security officials further solidified the cooperative relationship.

Security experts have pointed to the significance of this partnership in the fight against global terrorism. Reports on counterterrorism efforts for 2023 have highlighted the successful cooperation between DST and the CIA.

The appointment of Director Burns is expected to further enhance Morocco-US collaboration, paving the way for a new approach to security diplomacy.

With the appointment of William Burns as an advisor to President Biden, Morocco’s security efforts are set to gain global visibility and recognition.

The implications of this strategic alliance extend beyond counterterrorism measures. The move positions Morocco as an essential partner in regional security.

Prior to his new appointment, Burns was known to meet with Biden regularly and brief him directly on world issues.

In his capacity as a Cabinet member, he will work closely with Avril Haines, the director of National Intelligence, who oversees the CIA and other intelligence agencies in the United States.

In response to Joe Biden’s announcement, William Burns stated that he acknowledges the vital role the Central Intelligence Agency plays in safeguarding national security and reflects the US president’s trust in their efforts.

He expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve in this capacity, representing the exceptional dedication of intelligence officers. “I am honored to serve in this role, representing the tremendous work of our intelligence officers,” he said.

It is worth noting that not all previous administrations have included top intelligence officials as members of their cabinet. For instance, former President Donald Trump’s cabinet included separate directors of national intelligence and CIA directors.
