Morocco, Finland Launch Joint Water Cooperation Group

Morocco’s Minister of Equipment and Water, Nizar Baraka, and Finland’s Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, Sari Essayah.

Agadir – Morocco and Finland have signed an agreement to establish a joint cooperation group in the water sector, strengthening bilateral collaboration and opening new avenues for business and technical partnerships between the two countries.

The agreement was signed today by Morocco’s Minister of Equipment and Water, Nizar Baraka, and Finland’s Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, Sari Essayah, according to a statement released by the Finnish government.

The signing follows a meeting between the two ministers in Morocco in March and coincides with Baraka’s official visit to Finland, which began today at the invitation of Essayah.

“Nizar Baraka, Morocco’s Minister of Equipment and Water, is undertaking a working visit to Finland from June 8 to 10, 2026, at the invitation of Sari Essayah, Finland’s Minister of Agriculture and Forestry. The two officials are scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting in Helsinki on June 8,” Morocco’s Ministry of Equipment and Water announced on Sunday.

In the statement shared by the  Finnish government, Essayah pointed to Finland’s expertise in water management technologies and solutions.

“Finland has world-class expertise in areas such as groundwater treatment, smart technology, water purification, wastewater recycling and responsible water use. The example of Morocco shows that there is a high demand for Finnish water expertise worldwide,” she said.

The newly established working group will focus on three key areas: groundwater expertise, dam management, and wastewater recycling.

“All of these focus areas have great potential for developing cooperation and trade relations,” the  Finnish government noted.

The initiative comes as countries around the world face mounting challenges related to water security, climate change, and resource management.

Morocco is also among the countries affected by similar pressures on water resources. In recent years, abundant rainfall has helped ease immediate shortages, yet the country endured around seven years of persistent drought that strained supply across multiple regions.

In response, Morocco has been advancing a set of structural measures, including expanded desalination capacity, dam infrastructure projects, and a more adaptive water policy to secure long-term resilience and reduce dependence on rainfall.

Additionally, the Finnish government stressed the urgency of strengthening international cooperation in the sector, noting that “the water security of over 2 billion people is already threatened” worldwide.

“Common challenges related to the sustainable use of water resources, climate change, water scarcity and growing demand for water must be identified,” the statement further read.

As part of his visit, Baraka is expected to meet representatives from several Finnish companies specializing in water technologies. The Finnish government said the companies will present “their diverse skills and expertise in the water sector” during discussions with the Moroccan minister.

According to the statement, Essayah and Baraka will attend the event as speakers, where “the introduction to Finnish water expertise will continue,” further showcasing Finland’s capabilities in water management and sustainable technologies.
