Rabat – Morocco broke the world record in the 1,500 meter race for the visually impaired during the World Para-Athletics Championships for people with special needs, which is being held at the Stade Charlotte in Paris from July 8 to 17.

In a statement on Monday, the Royal Moroccan Federation of Sports for People with Disabilities (FRMSPSH) indicated that the Moroccan runner Fatima Ezzahra El Idrissi managed to break the world record in the 1500 meter race (class T-12), winning a gold medal after covering the distance in a time period of 4 minutes 22 seconds 15 millisecond.

In addition to this performance, two Moroccan athletes won two more medals during the sporting event, with Moncef Bouja winning a silver medal in the 100 meter final and Oumaima Oubraym securing a bronze in the discus throw contest.

Given the importance of this qualifying competition for the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, the ongoing tournament has been placed under the auspices of the International Paralympic Committee.

TWhile this sporting event brings together 1,700 athletes with different disabilities —  physical, visual, mental, or psychological — from 120 countries, and Morocco is participating with 18 athletes.

Some of the participating athletes have already made a name for themselves in previous competitions. At the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games last year, for instance, Ayoub Sadni won the gold medal in the T47 400 meters. He also finished third in the T47 400-meter division at the 2019 World Championships in Dubai.

Another example is that of Youssra Karim, a discus throw champion at the Tokyo Olympics, who defeated Hayat El Garaa, a fellow Moroccan teammate, to win the silver medal in the women’s F41 category for short stature.

Saida Amoudi, another athlete, won the bronze medal in the women’s F34 shot-put category, finishing behind China’s Zou Lijuan and Poland’s Lucyna Kornobys. Amoudi was the first to win a medal for Morocco at the Paralympics.
