FIFA has officially appointed Uzbek referee Ilgiz Tantashev to take charge of Morocco’s upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup group-stage match against Scotland.
The governing body confirmed the referee appointments on Tuesday ahead of the highly anticipated encounter, which will be played on Friday as part of the second round of Group C fixtures.
Tantashev will be assisted by fellow Uzbek officials Andrey Tsapenko and Timur Gaynullin, who have been selected as assistant referees for the match.
Jordanian referee Adham Makhadmeh has meanwhile been appointed as the fourth official, while his compatriot Mohammad Al-Khalaf will serve as reserve assistant referee.
Why Tantashev?
The appointment comes ahead of a key fixture for the Atlas Lions, who are aiming to strengthen their position in group C of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, after a draw against Brazil 1-1, and move closer to qualification for the knockout stages.
Tantashev is regarded as one of Asia’s most experienced referees and has officiated several high-profile international matches in recent years, including competitions organized by FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).
Morocco will face Scotland on Friday at 11:00 PM Moroccan time in a match expected to attract significant attention from football fans across the globe.
