Morocco has a chance to make African football history when it takes on Scotland in its second Group C match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Friday.
The Atlas Lions are on the verge of becoming the first African nation to avoid defeat in six consecutive World Cup group-stage matches. Morocco currently shares the continental record with Cameroon and Senegal, both of whom also managed five straight unbeaten group games.
Morocco’s run began at the 2018 World Cup in Russia with a 2-2 draw against Spain after defeats to Iran and Portugal. Four years later in Qatar, the Atlas Lions went unbeaten in the group stage, drawing with Croatia before beating Belgium and Canada to top Group F. They then extended their streak with a 1-1 draw against Brazil in their opening match at the 2026 tournament.
Cameroon previously recorded five consecutive unbeaten group-stage matches between the 1982 and 1990 World Cups, while Senegal matched the feat across the 2002 and 2018 editions. A positive result against Scotland would allow Morocco to stand alone at the top of this African ranking.
Now, another piece of history is within reach. Avoid defeat against Scotland, and the Atlas Lions will write a new chapter in African football by becoming the first team from the continent to go six straight World Cup group-stage matches without losing.
