Trump has not yet attended any matches at the 2026 World Cup, which is being co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico and kicked off on June 11. But FIFA President Gianni Infantino confirmed that the US president will be present at the 2026 World Cup final. “We will be with the US president to enjoy the final and present the trophy to the winner, together of course. We are together all the way,” Infantino told Fox News on Tuesday.
This will not be the first time a head of state has attended a World Cup final, or handed out medals to players and the trophy to the eventual winners. This previously occurred with the Emir of Qatar, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, who joined Infantino on the pitch at Lusail Stadium in Doha and presented the World Cup trophy to the newly crowned world champions, Argentina, following their triumph in 2022. He also presented Messi with the traditional Qatari bisht, which the Argentina’s captain wore during the trophy-lifting ceremony.
Spain’s former king, Juan Carlos I, previously presented the trophy to Italy captain Dino Zoff at the 1982 World Cup, while Queen Elizabeth II handed the trophy to England captain Bobby Moore after they were crowned world champions in 1966.
Trump’s reported decision to participate in the trophy presentation at the 2026 World Cup comes in the wake of the controversy surrounding the trophy ceremony following Chelsea’s Club World Cup triumph over Paris Saint-Germain in New Jersey.
On that occasion, Trump handed the trophy to Chelsea captain Reece James, but his failure to leave the podium resulted in him becoming part of the team’s celebrations, much to the surprise of the Chelsea squad.
