Rabat – Security services at Tangier Med Port thwarted an attempt to smuggle 14,245 narcotic pills into the country on Tuesday. A statement from police said that security services intercepted the shipment during an inspection using trained sniffer dogs.

The police found the drugs aboard a Moroccan-registered international freight truck shortly after it arrived on a ferry from a Spanish port. The substances were concealed inside the truck’s structure. The shipment included 11,145 Rivotril pills and 3,100 Trankimazin narcotic pills.

Police arrested the truck driver, a Moroccan national, for further investigation to identify all possible local and international links and to arrest any potential accomplices.

In 2024, Moroccan police handled 92,346 drug-related cases, arresting 119,692 individuals. Of those arrested, 287 were foreign nationals, the report detailed.

Police also seized 123 tons and 971 kilograms of cannabis in different operations across the country, as well as 1.9 tons of cocaine, 16.5 kilograms of heroin, and over 1.4 million psychotropic substances.

Meanwhile, police handled 106,117 cases last year, arresting 134,126 individuals – including 378 foreigners.

During the same period, police seized approximately 170 tons and 768 kilograms of cannabis and its derivatives, as well as more than 1.7 tons of cocaine, 5.9 kilograms of heroin, and over 1.591 psychotropic tablets, including 350,572 ecstasy pills.

Joint operations against international trafficking also marked six controlled delivery operations with Spain that resulted in the seizure of over 55 tons of cannabis and the arrest of 38 suspects.

Morocco continues to intensify efforts to tackle domestic drug trafficking, as well as contributing to initiatives aimed at combating drug-related crimes internationally in joint operations with partners like France and Spain.
