VAR: FIFA to Implement Additional Measures for France vs Morocco Game

This comes as FIFA continues to face popular backlash over poor refereeing appearing to favor “big” teams or traditional World Cup powerhouses.

Amid ongoing controversies and debates over refereeing issues, FIFA has decided to implement additional measures for the France vs. Morocco quarterfinal.

Converging reports indicate FIFA is introducing new measures to ensure that VAR remains fully operational throughout the game.

Mundo Deportivo reported that an assistant video assistant referee and the backup VAR will be stationed inside the stadium.

“Uruguay’s Leodán González will serve as VAR, while Nicaraguan official Tatiana Guzmán will act as the backup VAR,” the Spanish news outlet said.

The decision comes in response to a series of controversies that put FIFA under scrutiny, with the latest refereeing backlash surging during and after the Egypt vs. Argentina round of 16 game.

The Egypt Football Association has complained about what it described as “unfair” and “biased” officiating in the Egyptian team’s 3-2 loss to Argentina.

“Defending the rights and interests of the Egyptian national team is not a matter that can be ignored, minimized, or treated as secondary,” the Egypt federation said.

Yet FIFA’s chief of refereeing has defended the Egypt-Argentina officiating, stating that “unfounded allegations have no place in our sport.”

Egypt particularly took issue with the referee’s decision to rule out a third goal for Egypt and deny them several fouls, including a penalty appeal.
