Princess Lalla Meryem arrived in London earlier today to represent King Mohammed VI at the coronation ceremony of King Charles III, which is scheduled for Saturday.

Upon her arrival at Farnborough Airport, Princess Lalla Meryem was welcomed by a special representative of the British Foreign Secretary and Morocco’s ambassador to London.

Since the late Queen Elizabeth passed away on September 8 of last year, her son King Charles III automatically ascended to the throne. Two days later, he was officially proclaimed British monarch at an ascension ceremony.

Morocco and the UK share good diplomatic relations.

IRabat and London have in recent years signed numerous agreements to deepen diplomatic cooperation and bilateral trade.

One of these was the Association Agreement, which the UK and Morocco signed in October 2019 to preserve the benefits that the two countries granted each other under the Morocco-EU Association Agreement, notably on trade.

The agreement entered into force in January 2021, and the two countries signaled their determination to preserve their bilateral partnerships post-Brexit. By the end of 2022, the total trade volume between the two countries increased by 53.3% to reach  £1.0 billion.

The two countries also cooperate in other fields other than trade, including security.

In October 2022, King Mohammed VI and King Charles III highlighted their shared desire to strengthen the long-standing diplomatic ties between London and Rabat during a phone conversation.

With last year marking the 300th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic relations between the UK and Morocco, the sovereigns celebrated the long-standing relations between the two countries. The two countries are longing for growth in other areas, including defense.

In addition to trade and defense, “there are plenty of other areas” of cooperation between Rabat and London, UK Ambassador to Morocco, Simon Martin, told Morocco World News. “We have a really important joint military exercise due to take place, involving both the army and air force.”
