Rabat – One of the worst weather-related catastrophes has hit the state of New York killing at least 28 people, and claiming the lives of more than 22 others across the US over the Christmas weekend, with more snow on the way.
In the storm’s aftermath residents of Buffalo, New York are either huddled around heaters, looking for cars trapped in snow drifts, or searching for other potential fatalities.
The New York governor, Kathy Hochul mentioned in an interview with local reporters that “This blizzard is one for the ages. Certainly, it’s the blizzard of the century.”
Hochul said that the storm came shortly after another “historic” snowfall in the area. Between the two incidences of extreme weather, the total snowfall is now close to 242 centimeters.
Executive of Erie county, Mark Poloncarz noted that they have yet to reach the end of the extreme weather as the national weather service (NWS) announced that more snow could occur on Tuesday.
Poloncarz expressed his condolences to the families and loved ones of the deceased.
“We’ve had so many bodies that various hospitals are full and we’re just having to go through and determine if the individuals have died from a blizzard-related death,” he added.
Following the chaos, thousands of flights have been grounded and many grocery stores have closed.
Driving bans were put in place last weekend amid the busy Christmas season, to try and help keep citizens safe.
Some victims died due to overexposure to freezing temperatures or passed away as they were left without heat in their homes following power shortages.
Shoveling or other snow-clearing activity led to health issues some of which resulted in further deaths.
The emergency services were delayed in responding to medical emergencies, due to the treacherous road conditions.
