Rabat – After 22 years, Morocco’s national handball team has secured a bronze medal in the African Handball Youth Championship.
On Wednesday, Morocco clinched its second bronze medal in its history at the African tournament after an impressive performance.
The Moroccan team dominated the first phase of the tournament with three wins against Burundi, Uganda, and Libya.
Starting the tournament with a convincing victory 10-0 against Burundi, the Moroccan team was primed for remarkable wins against Uganda and Libya with good scores of 45-24 and 43-34.
Burundi quickly recovered from the Moroccan defeat as it secured a 32-32 tie against Libya and a 50-39 victory against Uganda, which granted it a place in the semi-finals. However, the team’s spirit was crushed after facing the Egyptian handball team, Africa’s top team. They notably lost by 43 points (66-22) to the Pharaohs.
Meanwhile, Morocco faced Rwanda in the semi-finals, in a packed BK Arena in Kigali. The intense game concluded with a close and surprising score of 34-35 in favor of the hosts.
In the finals, Burundi again faced Morocco, with the north African team winning by 41-34.
The Men’s African Youth Championship, organized by the African Handball Federation, concluded on Wednesday with Rwanda receiving its first-ever medal and Egypt obtaining its seventh gold medal in the regional tournament, reinforcing its domination over the African handball scene.
As the Moroccan youth team rose to the top 3 African handball teams, the country’s senior squad is set to participate in the upcoming World Men’s Handball Championship scheduled to take place in Poland and Sweden in January 2023.
The Moroccan handball team qualified for the cup after defeating Guinea 28-2 in the 2022 African Men’s Handball Championship in July.
