Casablanca – Morocco has been elected to the Executive Committee of the Association of Secretaries General of African Parliaments (ASGAP). The election took place on the sidelines of the Standing Committees’ August sessions of the Pan African Parliament (PAP) held in Midrand, South Africa.

With this election, as part of the 11th Conference of African National and Regional Parliaments’ Presiding Officers, the first vice-president of the Pan-African Association is set to be Morocco’s representative Najib El Khadi, Secretary General of the House of Representatives.

The conference was held in conjunction with the African Union’s sixth legislative session of the PAP (AU) under the theme of “Building Nutritional Resilience on the African Continent: Accelerating Human, Social, and Economic Development.”

According to El Khadi, Morocco’s involvement in ASGAP will provide the opportunity to improve the association’s legal structure, with the Moroccan parliamentary delegate working with a drafting committee formed for this purpose.

The Moroccan Speaker of the House of Representatives further emphasized Morocco’s dedication to Africa’s development and its unwavering call for South-South cooperation.

In this regard, he recalled the country’s massive investment in a number of countries, noting that 60% of Moroccan foreign investment is directed toward Africa.

Since joining PAP in 2018, Morocco has succeeded to consolidate its presence in the continental parliament.

On November 27, 2021, El Khadi was elected ASGP president during the 143rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (UIP) in Madrid.

Last July, Moroccan MP Laila Dahi of the National Rally of Independents (RNI) representing the Laayoune-Sakia El Hamra region, was elected president of the PAP’s Youth Caucus.

Khadija Arouhal, from the Party of Progress and Socialism (PPS), was also elected vice-president of the Commission on Gender.
