Rabat – Commemorating the Cape Verde official opening of its general consulate in the Southern Moroccan city of Dakhla, the country’s Foreign Affairs Minister Rui Alberto De Figueiredo Soares announced that the move is the ultimate confirmation of his country’s support for Morocco’s territorial integrity.
“The opening of the General Consulate of the Republic of Cabo Verde in Dakhla also expresses support for the Autonomy Plan presented by Morocco and the efforts of the UN to find a credible and realistic solution to the resolution of the dispute over the Sahara,” the Foreign Minister said.
The announcement came after De Figueiredo Soares’s meeting with his Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita, on the occasion of the consulate inauguration in Dakhla.
The top Cape Verdean diplomat also noted that the opening of the consulate reflects his country’s desire to consolidate bilateral relations with Morocco.

This is not the first time Cape Verde has expressed full support for Morocco’s territorial integrity in recent years.
Since withdrawing its recognition of the self-proclaimed Sahrawi Arab Diplomatic Republic in 2007, the African country has consistently spoken in support of Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as the most optimal and realistic solution to the decades-old Western Sahara dispute.
In a meeting with Bourita in 2019, the former Cape Verdean Foreign Minister, Luis Felipe Tavarez, reaffirmed his country’s recognition of the “Moroccanness of Western Sahara” and lauded Morocco’s commitment to African prosperity and pan-African solidarity.
“Cape Verde is a neighbor and brother country [to Morocco]. We share maritime borders, but we mostly share a common cultural heritage; we belong to the same continent… We have common values and converging views on many regional and continental matters,” Tavarez said.
