Rabat – Marsa Maroc, the national operator of Moroccan ports, reported a turnover of MAD 1.9 billion ($179.5) at the end of the first half of 2022, marking a 14% increase from last year’s MAD 1.7 billion ($160.6).

In a statement submitted to the Casablanca Stock Exchange, the company managed an overall portal traffic of 25 million tons of goods at the end of June 2022, 9% up compared to the same period in 2021.

Underlying the improved operations is a 13% rise in the volume of container traffic. The Marsa Maroc Group reports container traffic activity of a little more than 1 million Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs).

In the course of the first half of 2022, transshipment container traffic — cargo shipment transitioning through Moroccan ports before arriving at their final destination — equally increased by 42% compared to June 2021, settling at 518,000 TEUs, the statement indicates.

In addition to improved international cargo traffic, Marsa Maroc Group reports enhanced domestic traffic operations, with national cargo shipments increasing by 8% at the end of the second quarter of 2022.

The group further notes that the rise in domestic cargo shipment activities in the second quarter of 2022 is mitigating the effect of the 14% drop during the first quarter of 2022, the statement adds.

Regarding the group’s investment activities in the first half of 2022, the statement notes that the port operator allocated MAD 156 million ($14.7) in investments for the acquisition of various operating equipment.

Earlier this year, Marsa Maroc ranked 13th on the list of Africa’s largest companies in terms of market capitalization, according to a report by African Business, a pan-African business-focused magazine.
