Rabat – Morocco ranked as the sixth most visited travel destination for French tourists in July 2022, according to l’Echo Touristique, a French tourism-focused media outlet.

Based on the number of flights booked through online platforms and travel agencies, Morocco was among the top 10 most visited holiday destinations for French travels.

Noting the post-pandemic dynamics of tourism, the report indicates that the business volume from travel operations between France and Morocco jumped by 59% compared to 2019.

While tourism activities are on the mend, the recent sharp rise in inflation is likely to slow down potential recovery.

Last month, Fitch, an American rating agency, warned that should the economic recession looming on the horizon for the European Union materialize, the hit will be especially felt in Morocco’s tourism.

The North African country is a top tourism destination for tourists from France and the European Union in general, making it especially vulnerable to an EU recession.

Despite the short-term threat to Morocco’s recovering tourism sector, the country has welcomed more than 1 million tourists in June of 2022, a 5% month-on-month increase, and more than two times the number of tourists two years ago, according to data from Morocco’s Tourism Ministry.

The long-awaited visits by Moroccans residing abroad (MREs) for holidays also contribute to the rebound of the tourism sector. In June alone, the number of the Moroccan diaspora visiting the country reached 620,000.

In addition to the rebound in tourism activities, Morocco has equally seen a 27% increase in the influx of Moroccans living abroad returning home for the summer holidays compared to 2019.

Meanwhile, with the recent rise in tourism activities, revenues have more than doubled compared to last year, according to official data.
