Rabat – American actor and musician Dominic Fike is embroiled in a major controversy over comments he made concerning Morocco and Africa during an interview at the Yves Saint Laurent fashion show that occurred in Morocco’s Agafay on July 15.
“It’s actually very weird they have got all the camels and things. Exactly as I imagined. We are in Africa right?” HBO’s Euphoria star said, eliciting criticism that described the statement as “racist” and “ignorant.”
The video of the interview, posted by the WWD magazine, received immense backlash from internet users, especially Moroccans, who condemned Fike’s “disrespectful” comments about the North African country and its history.
Baffled by the Euphoria star’s statement, many have argued that travelers should educate themselves about a country and its culture before visiting.

“Shame on you for disrespecting our land and culture,” an Instagram user commented under a recent post on Fike’s Instagram account.
“@Dominicfike shame on you [for] saying that about Morocco, you seem to have no idea about the diversity of this big kingdom,” said a Twitter user.
Many used the incident as an opportunity to challenge stereotypes that people hold concerning Morocco and highlight the country’s diverse culture, history, and landscapes.
As the North African country is known for its varied landscapes, ranging from deserts to mountains and beaches, Morocco is an attractive shooting destination for both cinema productions and fashion shows.
The French luxury brand Yves Saint Laurent chose Morocco’s Agafay desert near Marrakech to unveil its Spring Summer 2023 Men’s Show. The Sahara’s magical scenery created the perfect backdrop for the YSL’s fashion show.
The Red City – Marrakech – became home to YSL’s official museum after Saint Laurent, founder of the French fashion brand, passed away. The museum opened its door in 2017.
