Rabat – The London Central Mosque recently announced that Eid al-Adha will fall on Saturday, July 9 in the United Kingdom.

On Monday evening, the mosque took to Twitter to share the news, writing, “Tomorrow: 30 June 2022 is the first day of the holy month of Dhu Alhijjah.”

The religious authorities further confirmed that the day of Arafat will be Friday, July 8. “May Allah accept our good deeds,” they added.

This year, Muslims in Saudi Arabia will also celebrate Eid al-Adha on July 9, commemorating Ibrahim (Abraham) ’s obedience and loyalty to God. The religious ceremony hails Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son Ismail (Ishmael) for the service of God.

While Eid al-Adha customs might slightly differ from one country to another, the festivities always include the morning Eid prayer and the slaughtering of a sheep, lamb, goat, or cow.

The head of the family, typically the father or older brother, often slaughters the livestock following the morning prayer. Family members then gather around the table to share delicious meat-based meals. Family visits are also an integral part of the celebration.

With Eid al-Adha falling on Saturday in the UK, the 2.8 million Muslim living there can enjoy their holiday with family and loved ones, despite the absence of any public holidays dedicated to such Muslim celebrations.

The Eid al-Adha celebration in the UK is expected to be diverse, since British Muslim communities originate from a wide range of countries in South Asia, the Arab World, the Balkans, and Africa in addition to local converts.
