Rabat – Algeria’s Ministry of Tourism has urged Algerian travel agencies to cut all ties with Spain and cancel all flights scheduled between the two countries.
According to reports from the Spanish media, Algeria’s latest move is a response to the Spanish-Moroccan investment forum which is scheduled to take place in the southern Moroccan city of Dakhla between June 21-22.
The forum aims to strengthen economic ties between Spain and Morocco and promote investment in the Southern region of Dakhla-Oued-Eddahab.
Algeria’s controversial decision on flights comes a few days after the Algerian government announced the suspension of its friendship treaty with Spain as a reaction to the European country’s new position on Morocco’s Autonomy Plan for Western Sahara.
The Spanish government endorsed Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as the most serious and credible solution to end the dispute over Western Sahara in March.

Dismayed by the Spanish government’s recent support of Morocco’s Autonomy Plan, Algeria has also recalled its ambassador from Madrid.
“Algerian authorities, surprised by this sudden reversal of the position of the former administering power of Western Sahara, have decided to recall their ambassador to Madrid for consultations with immediate effect,” Algeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on March 19.
Algeria’s response to Spain’s change of position reflects the Algerian regime’s discontent with Morocco’s diplomatic achievements on the Western Sahara question.
In addition to Spain, Germany, France, and the US have all described the Moroccan autonomy initiative as the most viable and realistic way out of the decades-long dispute over Western Sahara.
