Rabat – More than 2 million passengers traveled to Morocco by air 21,330 in the period between February 7 and March 31, according to the latest estimates compiled by Morocco’s National Airport Office (ONDA).

Overall airport traffic remains 20% below pre-pandemic.

Mohammed V airport, Morocco’s largest airport, welcomed 565,484 passengers in March through 5,330 flights, 29% and 25% below 2019 traffic respectively.

Airports located in the country’s northern and eastern regions have witnessed the highest recovery in the past few weeks, regaining more than 100% of pre-pandemic traffic, ONDA reported.

Tangier’s Ibn Batouta airport received 110,154 passengers, up by 13% from 2019, the Oujda’s Angad airport received 61,992 passengers, a 37% compared to 2019 traffic, and the Nador El Aroui airport received 61,843 passengers, 16% up from 2019.

The Tetouan airport has been Morocco’s best-performing airport in the past year. According to ONDA, the airport has seen an influx of passengers set at 16,600 travelers, 15 times more than in 2019.

With the number of passengers exceeding 170,000 passengers over March 2022, the recovery rate of national air traffic is set at 67% compared to the same period of 2019, against a 71% recovery rate on the international level.

With the exception of South America and Maghreb countries, international airports recovered an average of 65% of pre-pandemic traffic.

Europe, meanwhile, has seen 82% of international air traffic reach a recovery rate of 66% compared to 2019.

According to ONDA, air freight reached a recovery rate of 83% compared to the same period of 2019, whereas air shipment services worldwide delivered a total of  6,796 tonnes in cargo shipments against 8,221 tonnes for the same period in 2019.
