Rabat – Royal Air Maroc is set to update its fleet as of 2023, the airline’s CEO Abdelhamid Addou has said.
Addou made the announcement to aviation news website International Flight Network on Thursday last week, saying that the country’s flag carrier will open a tender where companies can bid to provide the aircraft next year.
Royal Air Maroc’s current fleet consists of nearly 40 Boeing 737s, but because of the pandemic, only 28 aircrafts are operational.
It is not clear if the company plans to acquire more Boeing 737 planes or whether it could order Airbus A320neo planes instead.
Addou said that there are currently no plans to order additional Boeing 737 Max aircraft.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, Royal Air Maroc removed ten aircraft from its fleet, seven of which were sold to cut costs and three of which were leased to other companies on short-term contracts.

Royal Air Maroc became the first African member of the Oneworld alliance in 2020 amid the pandemic, in order to facilitate international flights for travelers to and from Morocco. Oneworld is a group of 14 airlines that normally offers luxury charter flights for clients.
Royal Air Maroc serves as the Oneworld hub in Africa, and according to the airline, the alliance is assisting it in increasing its global market share among passengers.
Royal Air Maroc is aiming to return to offering the number of flights it did pre-pandemic, within the next two to three years.
