Rabat – Police in Casablanca thwarted a trafficking operation of 18,010 psychotropic tablets and ecstasy on Tuesday morning after intersecting a truck transporting goods, a statement from Morocco’s General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) said today.

The medicine is only available legally with a doctor’s prescription.

Police seized the truck immediately upon its arrival at the entrance of Casablanca’s bypass.

The search operation led to the discovery of 18,000 tablets of the “Rivotril” type and 10 units of ecstasy concealed in the cab of the vehicle.

The operation also led to the arrest of the driver, aged 42, according to the DGSN statement. He was taken to police custody for further investigation into the case.

The operation is part of Morocco’s continuous efforts to combat drug and psychotropic trafficking networks.

According to DGSN’s annual report in 2021, joint security operations with the General Directorate for Territorial Surveillance (DGST) resulted in the seizing of 1,437,362 psychotropic tablets, including 53,756 ecstasy tablets, a record increase of over 201% compared to 2020.

Morocco’s security services also carry out intensifying operations against drug trafficking. In 2021 alone, they handled 82,950 cases related to the possession and trafficking of drugs.

Police seized 433 tonnes of cocaine in addition to 191 tonnes and 158 kilograms of cannabis, the annual report added.
