Rabat – Morocco’s National Office of Airports (ONDA) has said it is putting in place a plan to welcome air flights following the government’s decision to reopen borders.
The office said the plan covers conditions that include a measure to provide a reassuring reception and a “healthy journey” to passengers.
ONDA said that its absolute priority is to preserve passengers, staff, and all airport users, as well as to support the border reopening operation in “the best possible conditions” by adapting airport infrastructure to the new health context.
The measures concern both the departure and arrival areas through the strengthening of cleaning operations of airport facilities, the installation of disinfectant gel dispensers in different points at the airports, as well as the implementation of plastic plates at check-in desks.
The measures also include the compulsory wearing of face masks by passengers and other airport users in all areas.
Physical distancing measures through floor signs are also included.
The features also involve temperature measuring with thermal cameras at the level of arrivals ventures and the passenger health form made available by authorities.
Morocco will reopen its airspace for international flights on February 7.
The North African country closed its borders on November 29 following the appearance of the COVID-19 Omicron variant in several countries in Europe and Africa.
The closure of borders affected the airline industry as well as Morocco’s traditionally vibrant tourism sector. Tourism professionals have been staging protests after many of them lost jobs due to the decision to close borders.
The closure of borders also impacted people stranded abroad and in Morocco.
Last week, many tourism workers and airline operators expressed satisfaction with the government’s decision to reopen borders.
Welcoming the decision, Royal Air Maroc, Binter, Transavia, Air Arabia Maroc, Air France, among other carriers, announced that they will resume flights to and from Morocco starting on February 7.
While announcing the reopening of borders, the Moroccan government pledged to release more information about the conditions and requirements to access Moroccan territory.
