Rabat – Morocco’s Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development has submitted to the UN a long-term low greenhouse gas emission strategy for 2050, renewing the country’s commitment to sustainable development and sustainable energy.
The strategy, which the government finalized in October 2021, suggests raising by almost 30% Morocco’s current clean energy ambitions.
While the current objective aims for 52% renewable energy in the total installed capacity by 2030, the new roadmap suggests raising the share of renewable energies to 70% by 2040 and 80% by 2050 in the electricity mix, in terms of both energy and capacity.
According to the ministry, these goals are attainable considering the current technological development and decreasing cost of renewable energies.
“The rapid and continuous drop in the cost of renewable energies and storage validates the orientation taken by Morocco and authorizes the adoption of very ambitious decarbonization strategies focused on the production of green electricity and hydrogen,” it said.
Morocco’s 2050 energy strategy revolves around seven objectives, which include the consolidation of sustainable development’s governance and improving the management and development of natural resources.
The strategy also aims to strengthen the conservation of biodiversity, promote human development, and reduce social and territorial inequalities.
By 2050, Morocco expects to cut its use of conventional thermal power stations (coal, natural gas, fuel oil) and increasingly depend on smart grid technologies for storage and demand management.
Morocco also seeks to reach partial decarbonization of the energy mix during the same period.
“Once demand is controlled, we can identify four main categories of options: new renewable energies (wind and solar, variable energies), conventional renewable energies (hydraulic and biomass), nuclear energy, and fossil fuels, associated with carbon capture and storage (CCS),” noted the ministry’s statement. “Each has advantages and costs or disadvantages of different and very specific natures.”
In line with UN SDG #7, Affordable and Clean Energy, Morocco is substantially increasing its share of renewable energy in the global energy mix, leading to a greener future.
