Fez – The president of the National Council for Human Rights (CNDH), Amina Bouayach, has sent a letter to the Moroccan Prime Minister, Aziz Akhannouch, pleading with the government to halt the extradition of Uyghur activist, Idris Hasan.
“In a letter addressed to the head of government, Amina Bouayach, president of the National Council for Human Rights of Morocco called on the government not to extradite and hand over Idris Aishan to the authorities of his country [China], in accordance with our obligations under the UN Convention against Torture,” the CNDH said on its Facebook account.
Following Morocco’s Court of Cassation’s decision, on December 15, to extradite Idris Hasan to China, several Moroccan and international human rights organizations have decried the decision.
The CNDH now adds its voice to the appeals from national and international advocacy groups.
The human rights committee of the Unity and Reform Movement (MUR), released a statement on December 20 urging the Moroccan government not to deport the Chinese activist. The statement from MUR said, “We join our voice to those calling on the Moroccan authorities not to expel Yidiresi Aishan.”
Four independent UN human rights experts expressed their concerns over Idris’s extradition to China, stressing that the activist is likely to face arbitrary detention, forced disappearance, torture, or other inhumane and degrading treatments.
Since his arrest at Casablanca’s Mohammed V Airport airport on July 19, human rights groups, including Amnesty International and MENA Rights have urged Morocco to not hand over the activist to Chinese authorities.
The NGOs have warned about the dangers of arbitrary arrest and torture in China.
