Morocco’s Economy to Benefit from Decarbonization

Rabat – The director of infrastructure at Morocco’s Ministry of Industry and Trade, Hicham Guedira, affirmed, on Wednesday in Rabat, that the economy should benefit from the decarbonization of industry in Morocco.

Guedira made the statements during a meeting themed “Decarbonization of the world economy: challenges and opportunities in the aftermath of the COP- 26,” initiated by the Policy Center for The New South (PCNS) and the World Bank (WB).

“When we talk about decarbonizing Moroccan industry, we don’t mean greenwashing. It is in the interests of operators on the economic and environmental level,” he said.

Bouzekri Razi also commented on the issue in his role as director of climate change, biodiversity and the green economy at the Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development.

Bouzekri pointed out Morocco’s “firm political will” to engage in the global fight against climate change, in particular through the signing of the Paris Climate Agreement.

“This desire aims to seize the opportunities presented by decarbonization, in particular those of a commercial nature, in terms of competitiveness and access to markets, through job creation, as well as ecological opportunities,” said Bouzekri.

Head of the Sustainable Mobility and Innovation Department at the Ministry of Transport and Logistics Karim Benamara noted that the mitigation of emissions linked to pollution, greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption, is a real problem both in Morocco and globally.

Benamara explained that in order to face such challenges, transport decarbonization policies should avoid and reduce transport demand, switch to clean transportation, and improve the energy efficiency of vehicles.

The head of the green economy commission at the General Confederation of Moroccan Enterprises (CGEM), Houda Bouchtia, also added to the discussion noting that decarbonization goes hand in hand with the competitiveness of the economy, allowing for the creation of value and various new job opportunities.

In September 2021, the United Nations (UN) warned that climate change, pollution, and a loss of nature are severely affecting human rights.

With decarbonization, many environmental improvements are possible, such as more energy savings, a lower rate of accidents, and less air pollution.
