Rabat – The 2021 International Mediterranean Day is held today, November 28 in Barcelona, with the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) bringing together 48 countries from Europe and the Mediterranean, including Morocco, to celebrate the event.
The event aims to highlight the richness and cultural diversity of the countries located within the Mediterranean basin and strengthen ties between the two shores.
Mediterranean Day is also an opportunity to discuss environmental issues, urging politicians and citizens to take action for a sustainable future around the Mediterranean.
In a statement to Morocco’s state agency MAP, Grammenos Mastrojeni, UfM Deputy Secretary General, stressed the importance of celebrating the commitment and cooperation between countries in the Mediterranean basin “despite some problems occurring between some countries.”
The event intends to highlight the efforts made in the Mediterranean to combat the COVID crisis and discuss potential solutions for irregular migration and climate change in the region.
Of Morocco, Mastrojeni said that the country is “a protagonist of many actions with the UfM in several areas, including those related to renewable energies and sustainable development.”
The UfM works proactively to achieve greater levels of integration and cooperation in the region with a focus on implementing projects that will benefit young people and women.
Launched in 1995, the UfD intends to strengthen the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership (Euromed), promote stability and integration to create “a common space of peace, of stability, security and socio-economic progress.”
