Rabat – An irregular migration boat crashed in the morning today in Oued Cherrat, a river near Rabat. Security services said that they have so far recovered four bodies while rescue efforts are still ongoing.

Morocco’s state-owned news agency MAP said searches are still ongoing to find other possible passengers who were onboard the boat.

The initial rescue operation enabled security services to save three people, who were transferred to Sidi Lahcen hospital in Temara, near Rabat.

Morocco’s security services opened an investigation to shed light on the circumstances of the accident and arrest accomplices involved in organizing the irregular migration attempt.

The operation comes amid growing concerns regarding the increase of irregular migration and human trafficking networks in the Mediterranean.

Moroccan security bodies, including national police and navy, usually find themselves engaged in joint collaboration to rescue irregular migrants risking their lives in the Mediterranean to reach Europe.

One of the latest rescue operations took place between the night of Tuesday and Wednesday. During the operation, the royal navy rescued 117 irregular migrants, including children and women.

The migrants were onboard dismal makeshift boats and kayaks.

In the past four years, Moroccan security services dismantled over 5,000 undocumented migration networks and rescued over than 80,500 migrants at sea.
