Rabat – Moroccan terminal operator APM Terminals in Med Port Tangier announced today the launch of the third phase of its expansion project, which is set to raise its capacity to 5 million Twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU).
APM Terminals Tangier is a leading terminal operator in Morocco, with direct services to 170 ports in 67 countries all around the world.
The facility is strategically located in the southern straits of Gibraltar, through which over 200 cargo vessels pass daily, carrying global trade between Asia, Europe, Africa, and America.
According to a press release from APM Terminals, the Moroccan terminal leader handled more than 2.2 million TEU in 2020, and it is working this year to reach an annual capacity of 5 million containers for a quay length of 2000 meters.
The port operator launched the project for its second phase in April 2021, which involved an additional 400 meters of quay, the equivalent of 1 million TEU.
“Today, the terminal is carrying on and rolling out the phase-3 project of its development plan, targeting additional quay length and capacity similar to that of phase-2,” said the press release.
The Tangier Med Port is currently ranked 25th worldwide, surpassing other massive ports in the Mediterranean such as the Piraeus Port in Greece, the Port of Valencia and the Port of Algeciras in Spain.
Despite a drop in activities due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Moroccan Port was able to resist the crisis, maintaining its distinction worldwide and preserving its major global alliances.
