The Israeli National Security Council has lifted its travel warning for Morocco after more than a decade of applying the measure.
Times of Israel and the Jerusalem Post quoted a statement from the Israeli National Security Council confirming the news.
The statement said that the decision came after a “top-level” assessment of the threat level that Israelis face in Morocco.
It emphasized a decrease in threats against Israelis while in Morocco, particularly after Israel and Morocco re-established relations last year.
Still, the National Security Council noted that Israelis should continue to be on “high alert” while staying in the North African country.
Home to over 200,000 jews in the aftermath of World War II, Morocco now counts an estimated number of 2,000 members of the Jewish diaspora, according to data compiled by the Jewish Agency.
Israel and Morocco re-established relations in December 2020.
The two countries have since vowed to further their rapprochement, emphasizing the importance of boosting and reinforcing cooperation in a wide range of issues, including tourism, trade, and political dialogue.
Recent data shows that trade between the two countries experienced a surge following their diplomatic rapprochement.
According to Israel’s Central Bureau of Statistics, trade between Morocco and Israel moved from $14.9 million recorded in January-July 2020 to $20.8 million in the same period in 2021.
Israeli airlines have also launched direct flights with Morocco, a historic move that was enthusiastically greeted by Jewish Moroccans and other Jews interested in traveling to the North African country.
Earlier this month, Israeli airline El Al announced its decision to increase its Marrakech-Tel Aviv flights to a biweekly frequency.
In addition, Morocco’s carrier Royal Air Maroc (RAM) signed with El Al a cooperation protocol (MoU) to govern their future relations and to develop their services to meet the needs and expectations of customers.
Royal Air Maroc is also expected to launch direct flights to Israel later this year.
