Spanish Politicians Call for Parliamentary Investigation into Ghali Scandal

The parliamentary inquiry will proceed alongside the current judicial investigations being carried out in Zaragoza after Spanish lawyer Antonio Urdiales initially submitted a formal request for an inquiry in early June. Since then, Zaragoza Judge Rafael Lasala has summoned Foreign Minister Arancha Laya as a defendant in the case.

Denver – Investigations into Spanish involvement in Brahim Ghali’s entrance into Spain are heating up as politicians prepare to request an investigative committee into the controversial event.

Members of the Spanish People’s Party (PP) announced an intention to begin formal parliamentary investigations into the circumstances surrounding Ghali’s illegal entrance into Spain in April. The PP is planning on filing the investigation request in the Congress of Deputies, the lower house of Spain’s legislative body.

After shocking testimony from a former aide, investigators allege the minister had full knowledge of Ghali’s whereabouts prior to his entrance and was complicit in his illegal entry into Spain.

The commencement of legislative investigations increases the pressure for Madrid to disclose the full truth behind Ghali’s dubious entrance into the Spanish mainland earlier this year.

“Every day, doubts about the role of Moncloa and the role of the government of La Rioja in the Ghali affair are increasing”, one member of the PP stated.

Ghali’s apparent illegal admission into Spain earlier this year caused an immediate uproar among activists, the media, and officials in Rabat. The Polisario leader has been accused of numerous human rights violations during his tenure as leader of the Polisario militia.

The admission of Ghali into Spain led to diplomatic fallout and the cessation of communication with Rabat, due to Madrid’s failure to bring Ghali to trial for his crimes.
