Rabat – The General Prosecutor at the Guelmim Court of Appeals has announced the opening of an investigation into the death of Abdelouahab Belfqih, a member of the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM).
The politician was found dead in his family home in Sidi Ifni, and there have been reports that he died from a gunshot wound.
The public prosecutor ordered an in-depth judicial investigation to shed light on the causes of the death of the politician.
While some reports suggest that Belfqih committed suicide, others have claimed the politician was killed.
Police informed the public prosecutor at the Guelmim Court of the transfer of Belfqih’s remains to a hospital after he was found dead.
The politician died from complications during a surgery.
During preliminary investigations at the house of the politician, police found a hunting rifle used in the shooting as well as blood stains.
Police seized the hunting rifle as part of the ongoing investigation to unveil more details around the circumstances of the politician’s death.
Belfqih’s death came a few days after he announced his decision to withdraw from politics.
According to reports, the veteran PAM politician’s sudden withdrawal from political life was due to his party’s decision to take off his electoral recommendations for regional council president for the Guelmim-Oued Noun region.
