Canada announced a decision to suspend passenger flights from Morocco amid an alarming increase in the number of COVID-19 cases.
Transport Canada announced the news on Saturday and applied the measure on Sunday, August 30.
The flights will remain suspended for 30 days until September 29 unless Transport Canada decides to extend the measure.
“Like every other element of Canada’s COVID-19 response, border measures are based on available data, scientific evidence and monitoring of the epidemiological situation both in Canada and internationally,” the company warned.
Transport Canada cited an increase in COVID-19 test results among travelers arriving in Canada from Morocco recently.
Travelers coming from Morocco through a third country will have to present a valid negative COVID-19 test prior to departure.
Canada’s flights ban does not include medical transfers, military flights or cargo-only services.
Morocco experienced an alarming increase in the number of COVIDè19 cases recently.
The North African country has been counting thousands of cases mounting to 9,000.
The increase in the number of deaths als caused concerns among Moroccan health officials and the government.
Morocco has been under a state of emergency as part of the preventive measures since March 2020.
Morocco also takes similar measures regarding flights depending on the epidemiological situation.
To date, air borders are partially opened due to the ease of the lockdown.
The North African country allowed international flights to operate on June 15, 2021.
It remains to be seen whether the government will announce a tightening of COVID-19 measures due to the increasing number of cases the country has been experiencing.
