Rabat – Morocco has detected hotspots of the recent COVID-19 virus variant, Delta, the head of the virology laboratory in the Hassan II University in Casablanca told Morocco World News.
The professor said that health professionals detected the hotspots in both Casablanca and Kenitra.
In a statement to MWN, the health official attributed the outbreak of the Delta virant to the gradual reopening of borders.
Morocco allowed the resumption of international flights, which started on June 15. The decision was intended to facilitate the return of Moroccans residing abroad (MREs) for the summer season as part of the Marhaba Operation.
The professor warned citizens against laxity, calling on them to respect all preventive measures, including social distancing and the use of face masks as part of the campaign against COVID-19.
According to the World Health Organization, the new strain emerged in India and is spreading at a “staggering rate.”
Over 80 countries detected cases of the new strain of the virus.
The World Health Organization described the strain as a “variant of concern.”
Morocco has witnessed a surge in the number of COVID-19 cases, recently.
In recent days, Morocco records over 700 cases per day, which stirred frustration and concerns among health professionals and the government.
On Thursday, the Head of Government, Saad Eddine El Othmani, said that the epidemiological situation is becoming worrying after the increase in the number of contamination and active cases.
He said that the cases have almost doubled during the last two weeks.
The Ministry of Health shared the same concerns. Minister of Health, Khalid Ait Taleb, warned earlier this week that authorities could impose lockdown measures again if necessary to face any potential deterioration of the situation in the country.
As of July 1, the total number of cases reached 532,150, including 518,101 recoveries, and 9,298.
The number of active cases reached 4,751.
