Rabat – In the wake of US President Donald Trump’s decision to recognize of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, the US embassy in Morocco has released a list of suggestions for Americans in the kingdom on how to keep safe in the case of violent demonstrations.

Many are worried that the decision, which received major pushback from many Arab and Muslim leaders as it would legitimize Israel’s claims to the city over Palestine’s, may spark a fresh wave of anti-American sentiment.

In anticipation of such an event, the embassy advises US nationals to “review your personal security plans; remain aware of your surroundings, including local events; and monitor local news for updates.  Maintain a high-level of vigilance, take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security and follow instructions of local authorities.  Avoid areas of demonstrations, and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations.”

Americans can stay up-to-date with further announcements on the US State Department’s Morocco page and on the US embassy’s Facebook and Twitter pages.

The US State Department recommends that all nationals sign up for the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), which will update travelers will security messages and make it easier for them to be contacted in the case of an emergency.

The US embassy is located in Rabat at KM 5.7, Avenue Mohammed VI in the neighborhood of Soussi, and its phone number is 05-37-63-72-00.

The US Consulate General is Casablanca at 8 Boulevard Moulay Youssef. American Citizens Services can be reached at 0522-64-20-99 during business hours.  For emergencies after hours, please call 0522-20-80-90 or 0661-13-19-39.

The US State Department also recommends that nationals consult its general information page for international travel emergencies.
