Road Accidents in Morocco Claim Lives of 14 Last Week

Rabat – Two people were killed and five others injured, two seriously, in a road accident on Sunday morning in the highway linking Khemisset to Rabat, near the Sidi Allal Bahrawi tollway, a locality near Rabat, said local authorities.

The accident took place at 7.00 a.m. when a taxi collided with another vehicle, killing the taxi’s two passengers and wounding five others who were rushed by the civil defence ambulance to the Tiflet provincial hospital.

The victims’ bodies were sent to the city’s morgue, they added. An investigation was opened to shed light on the circumstances of this accident, they said.

Traffic accidents are a real social and economic problem in Morocco. Every year, close to 4,000 people are killed because of traffic accidents. Despite the awareness-raising campaign launched in recent years by the Moroccan government, the number of fatal road accidents is still on the rise.

According to the statistics published by the Ministry of Equipment Transport and Logistics earlier this year, the number of people killed because of road accidents reached 3,593 in 2016, which represents an increase of 0.79 in comparison to 2015.

According to the Ministry, three main factors are the cause of traffic accidents: poor infrastructure, inadequate vehicles, and the human factor.
